The Corry Beavers swimming and diving teams were back in action Thursday night as they hosted the Harborcreek Huskies for a Region 2 showdown at the YMCA of Corry's Arlene and Bruce Smith Natatorium. A week removed from defeat at the hands of defending Region 2 champion Fairview, the Beavers were able to sweep the Huskies. The Lady Beavers, despite being short-handed and out-numbered, pulled off a come from behind victory highlighted by wins in the final five events of the dual. Their winning 400 Freestyle relay capped off the comeback and secured a 85-81 victory to improve to 4-2 in the Region 2 standings. The Beaver boy's team was dominant from start to finish with a 96-39 victory over the visiting Huskies. The boy's improve to 3-3 in region competition.
Junior Mackenzie Spence led the Lady Beavers winning four times. Her win in the 100 backstroke (1:04.71) was the turning point of the meet as teammate Rachel Moats finished just behind her in second place. Moats and Spence teamed up with Freshman Lily Hogan and Sophomore Taylor Mitchell to open the meet with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay (2:17.83). Moats and Spence then joined Alli and Mahra Goodwill in the deciding 400 Freestyle relay (4:01.47). Spence also joined the Goodwills and Taylor Moats to win the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:50.48). Rachel Moats was also a winner in the 100 butterfly (1:08.70) in addition to her relay efforts and her big second place finish in the 100 backstroke. "Mackenzie and Rachel's 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke was critical in us coming away with the meet" mentioned coach Gerould. "Then Alli Goodwill and Lily Hogan finished first and fourth to give our 400 freestyle relay a shot at winning."
Junior Taylor Moats won the 200 (2:13.22) and 500 (5:56.90) freestyle events on top of her relay effort while Alli Goodwill won the 100 breaststroke. Senior Sylvia Elmquist picked up a win on the diving board with a season best score of 224.75.
Senior Jonathan Albers and Sophomore Logan Amy led the boys with four wins apiece. Albers paced the 50 freestyle (24.23) and 100 butterfly (1:00.39) while Amy won the 200 IM (2:24.54) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.08). The two teamed up with Senior Aiden Knapp and Junior Levi Ehrhart to open the meet with a win in the 200 Medley relay (1:51.54). Albers, Amy and Ehrhart then joined Junior Gavin Maleski to win the 200 Freestyle relay (1:41.90). Knapp was a winner on the diving board in addition to his relay effort. Freshman Brandon Jackson also picked up a win in the 200 freestyle (2:19.50).
The Beaver boys team will continue their schedule as they will travel to Iroquois High School for the 39th annual Iroquois coaches association Invitational on Saturday. The invitational will consist of a prelim/final format where the top 12 swimmers from the preliminary heats will qualify to swim in the finals to score team points. The Beavers will look to improve upon their 9th place finish in 2022.
The Beavers will pick up Region 2 action Monday as they are scheduled to host the Girard Yellowjackets at the YMCA of Corry. Come out to support your Corry Beavers Varsity swimming and diving teams.
