The Corry Boys Basketball Team traveled to Union City Friday Night and came out victorious over the bears by a score of 66-41. Landon Deane and Nick Scouten were the leaders in the scoring column with 16 a piece, Keaton Frisina with 14, Kamdyn Moon with 8, Parker Trask with 6, and Vanchieri/Baker/Kent with 2 a piece.
Corry turned Union City over 34 times defensively & did not allow any of the bears to get into double digits scoring. The beavers kept leading scorers Troyer and Fox well under their averages from the first two games they played this season with 5 and 9 points.
The Corry offense took right off due to defensive pressure and had a 20-7 first quarter lead. Corry's offense was best when they were able to get into transition, but needs to work on our half court offense. Corry has struggled the first couple games scoring the basketball shooting 32% from the floor on 24/74 shooting. The good news is that we are still winning basketball games shooting a very low percentage, but we need to get better at finishing around the rim and our 3 ball will get there. We are a very good shooting team, and I am not worried outside shots falling here as we get settled in.
We did get edged out on rebounding 41 to 44, but we are improving in that area. I can tell my guys are trying hard and making that a point of emphasis this year. Leading the way was Vanchieri with 9 rebounds, Deane with 7, and Moon with 6.
Kamdyn Moon is doing an incredibly nice job running the show this year. He is such a good teammate and does anything that is asked of him. He led the team in assists tonight with 5, but as you can see makes an impact in every area on the floor. Kamdyn Moon took another charge defensively, which puts him in the lead over Vanchieri 2-1.
On the defensive side Keaton is our leader in which he had 4 steals, but it was nice to see a couple other guys lead in the defensive categories. Nick Scouten had 7 steals and Landon Deane had 7 deflections. Baker and Deane also had 3 steals a piece.
Tonight we won in regard to expectation, but we need to be more consistent offensively and just clean things up. I believe we are locked in and playing with a lot of energy, but we need to keep improving and playing better the further we get into the season to compete at level we want to. The team shot 11/17 from the foul line, which is just a smidge better than the game before but we need to get into that 70% range as a team.
Joe Gradler and Andrew Miller had there first varsity minutes.
This upcoming week we play at Cambridge Springs on Tuesday, and home vs. Clymer on Friday. We are a fun team to watch, and everyone is invested to keep improving. Hopefully this week we continue to see steady improvement.
